A Pulmonologist, or pulmonary disease specialist, is a physician who possesses specialized knowledge and skill in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the lungs and respiratory tract as well as sleep disorders. Patients needing the care of a Pulmonologist are often referred by their Primary Care Physician.

In addition to diagnosing and treating patients with respiratory illnesses such as pneumonia, tuberculosis and emphysema, Pulmonologists also perform specialized minor surgical procedures in complex pulmonary cases that include arterial catheter placements and bronchoscopies
