Blair Medical Associates began on a Sunday morning in 1971. While making rounds on their patients at the Altoona Hospital, Dr. Paul Wingert, an Internist, and Dr. Marvin Meisner, a cardiologist, discussed the problem of working seven days a week. What began as a simple arrangement to work every other Sunday in coverage for one another grew into the concept of Blair Medical Associates.

Later that year the agreement was formalized when Dr. Philip Hoovler, Family Practice, joined Dr. Wingert and Dr. Meisner. On January 1, 1972, they began their joint practice of medicine in the office of Dr. Wingert at the Blair Medical Center, located on Howard Avenue, in Altoona, PA. There were only three examining rooms and four employees at the time.

Seeing the need for a larger facility, Blair Medical Associates approached Dr. Richard B. Magee to build a larger office for them at the Blair Medical Center. In two short years, five primary care physicians joined the group. In 1973 Blair Medical Associates moved into building C which was hoped would be a permanent home.

Blair Medical Associates continued to add qualified doctors until again they ran out of space. In the spring of 1980, Blair Medical Associates moved to the office at 1414 Eighth Avenue in Altoona. To provide care in outlaying areas, satellite offices had been opened in Bellwood and Hollidaysburg.

Blair Medical Associates continued to expand by adding additional physicians, adding more services, and adding more satellite offices. 1985 two new specialties were added to Blair Medical Associates. Neurology and Endocrinology. Over the years other specialties have been added: Dermatology, General Surgery, Gynecology, Oncology/Hematology, Pediatrics, Podiatry, Psychology, Rheumatology, and a Wound Clinic.

In 2004 Blair Medical Associates again out grew its facility and acquired a large space in the Station Medical Center. With this move Blair Medical Associates moved several specialties under one roof. Today Blair Medical Associates has 50+ physicians and extenders and 8 satellite offices, located in Altoona, Bellwood, Duncansville, Hollidaysburg, Huntingdon, Roaring Spring and Tyrone. Until this most recent move, Blair Medical Associates had 14 satellite offices. Several Blair Medical Associates physicians travel to other outreach sites located in Bedford and Clearfield to better serve their patients.
